Are you ready to start a non-alcoholic mocktail lifestyle but confused about where to start? I have a few tips on what to look for and how to create your own yummy mocktail at home.
When looking for non-alcoholic drinks in the store you have to keep your eyes open on the labels.
Many drinks not only have strange ingredients, but they also can contain tons of sugar as well as natural and artificial flavours to mask the fact that there is no alcohol present.
The last thing you want to do is to decide you’re going to quit drinking alcohol (or become sober-curious) for health reasons, only to drink something that has loads of artificial ingredients and sugars.
Here are a few tips on what to look for when it comes to drinking and creating a mocktail or non-alcoholic drink:
Consider sugar content
As I mentioned above, many drinks on the shelves have added sugars, especially no-alcohol white wines. Look for drier versions or labels that have low to no sugar added. Clearsips, a website dedicated to all things low and no alcohol, enables you to search for low-sugar options.
Look for de-alcoholized wine instead of juice
Many of the no-alcohol wines in the stores taste just like juice in my opinion. But if I wanted to juice, I would have asked for juice! Instead, consider a wine that has been ‘de-alcoholized’, where the alcohol has been removed. Oddbird is a fantastic brand that sells all sorts of non-alcoholic wine that tastes like wine.
Make mocktails at home
There are so many options for making mocktails at home. Many times you can simply use what you have in the fridge! A super simple mocktail could include mashing some mint in the bottom of a glass, adding some lime and honey, and topping it with sparkling water. Or thinly slice some grapefruit, squeeze a bit of the juice into a glass, top with ice and add a sprig of rosemary. You can find gin and vodka brands that have no alcohol but taste like the real thing. Just be mindful of those added flavours and sugars!
